Curfews for Minors

July 2007

On October 16, 1995, a curfew for minors (under 18 years of age) went into effect throughout Panama City, which is intended to minimize violence and delinquency in the country. The plan includes strict enforcement of the curfew law by local police. As a result, students attending night classes must have a carnet issued by the school, or if employed, a certificate of employment must be obtained.

The Office of the Mayor, the National Police and the Municipal approved the curfew and the recent changes to the curfew schedule, as follows:  Minors who are picked up for a curfew violation are subject to detention at a police station until they are released into the custody of their parents. Parents may be fined for the violation and the amount of the fine is a discretional call by the Corregidor (magistrate) for each province in Panama.
