August 16, 2005
On August 16, approximately twenty sailors from the U. S. Navy, USS Thomas S. Gates (CG-51), donated their off-duty day to refurbish and repair some of the facilities at the John F. Kennedy Elementary School in Chilibre. The K-6th grade school serves a total student population of 1,553 in two sessions.
The sailors' workday included refurbinshig restrooms and fans throughout the school, replaced parts of the watertank which supplies water for the school, plumbing repairs, electrical repairs and paint touch ups.
The Panama Council Navy League of the U.S. and the American Society in Panama joined the effort by providing a delicious lunch for volunteers as well as the students in session, which totaled approximately 700 students.
