Coast Guard Seamen volunteer in Colon

October 14, 2005

On Friday, October 14, 2005, fourteen seamen from US Coast Guard Cutter Campbell volunteered their day to repaint the recreational area at Pablo Arosemena Elementary School in the Colon Province. The elementary school serves a population of 1,250 students in PK-6 grades.

The Coast Guard volunteers painted the walls of the recreation area which were badly stained. Mirta Arauz de Ibarra, Principal, expressed appreciation for the project as aside from improving the bad appearance, the school is also making preparations to host Panama’s President Martin Torrijos next month.

The students welcomed the volunteers at the school entrance with songs and had to be encouraged to go home after an extended gathering around volunteers waiting for autographs. The students, staff and administration were grateful for the project.

Ensign Tony Goldstein and crew were treated to delicious hamburgers and cold water and soda by the Association of Veterans Spouses and Friend Volunteers.
