U.S. donates tactical vehicles to PNP for Darien security

The Embassy of the United States of America donated five tactical military vehicles to the Panamanian National Police (PNP) Wednesday as part of an ongoing program to enhance the PNP's ability to enhance security in the Panamanian-Colombian border region in the Darien.

The trucks are among a group of 18 heavy-duty vehicles procured by the Embassy's Narcotics Affairs Section and the Office of Defense Cooperation and costing more than $1 million. Nine of the vehicles were previously turned over to the PNP, and four more currently in production will be delivered at a later date.

The PNP will use the trucks to transport personnel and equipment in the remote jungle areas of the Darien.

Panama and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding in August 2001 specifying the terms and conditions of the donation program.

At the donation ceremony, Ambassador Linda E. Watt said: The PNP has made an admirable effort to bolster security in the Darien and to confront the threat posed there by narco-terrorists operating out of Colombia.

I had an opportunity to visit the Darien just two weeks ago, and I gained a deep appreciation for the challenges confronting security forces there. I also met many dedicated individuals who are engaged in various endeavors to improve living conditions, provide economic opportunities, and protect the rich natural resources of this stunningly beautiful, rugged region.

Attending the ceremony were officials of the PNP and of the U.S. Embassy.
