Speeches 2003

July 4, 2003 - recorded June 16, 2003

Taped Remarks by Secretary of State Colin L. Powell For Panama Centennial

On behalf of the people of the United States, please accept my heartfelt congratulations as Panama celebrates its centennial anniversary.

Our mutual well-being depends, in no small part, on the close relationships we forge with one another, and with our hemispheric neighbors. A strong and vibrant Panama is good for the Americas, good for the United States, and good for the world.

United by democratic ideals, tested by the defeat of autocratic rule, and nourished by family ties, our histories, and our futures, are intertwined.

As friends and as neighbors we recognize that we each have an obligation and an opportunity to make our democracies work for the benefit of all. You deserve high praise for the seamless transfer of the Panama Canal's ownership and operation. The Canal remains a monument to human ingenuity, and to our enduring relationship. You are a regional and global leader in many areas beyond the stewardship of this infrastructure so vital to hemispheric security and world trade.

In the worldwide fight against drugs and terrorism, you have been resolute allies. You have found innovative ways to protect our planet's biodiversity while creating new industries such as eco-tourism. Since 1989, you have democratically elected three successive presidents. And you have embraced policies for good governance and market-oriented growth that will reap rewards for Panama and the region in the years ahead.

The United States looks forward to another hundred years of partnership with Panama - a deep and enduring partnership that strengthens democracy, security and prosperity in our hemisphere.

From the people of the United States to the people of Panama, warmest congratulations and best wishes on this happy and historic occasion.
