Ambassador Eaton's Arrival Statement

I am extremely pleased to be in Panama and to have the opportunity to serve President Bush and the American people as their ambassador to the great Republic of Panama.

Our countries have a long history of close and friendly ties. We are partners in the shared goal to create a more secure, prosperous and democratic hemisphere and world. It is my objective during my tenure to build on the existing links between our governments, institutions and peoples in order to achieve this goal.

My good friends Linda Watt and Ambassador Federico Humbert have told me much about your warmth and generosity of spirit. Now it is time for me to find out for myself. I plan to travel widely in this beautiful country and acquaint myself with the land and its people.

My very first order of business, however, is to present my letters of credence to President Torrijos. After that, I will take up my official duties and will begin to work to achieve our mutual goals.

Thank you again for this gracious reception.
