Speeches 2005

September 9, 2005

Remarks by Ambassador Eaton during Presentation of Credential

Mr. President, I am greatly honored to appear before you today to present to you my letters of credence as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Panama.

I know that Panama and the United States are closely linked by geography, commerce, history, and, most importantly, friendship.

President Bush asked me to carry to you his highest regards and to reiterate his friendship for you and for Panama.

Blessed by geography as the crossroads of the world, Panama is also a place where vital interests of our two nations coincide. Our shared commitment to regional peace and security, to economic prosperity, to democratic government is borne of our shared interests and also our shared values.

Mr. President, a year ago our secretary of state attended your inauguration. At that time, you expressed your strong commitment to social justice; to a better, more efficient and more transparent government; and to a zero tolerance for corruption. Mr. President, I want to assure you that we share your dedication to these noble goals and that I and the government I represent will continue to assist you in the pursuit of those goals.

Thank you for your generous reception and please allow me to wish both our nations God’s blessings as we strive toward our common goals.
